sudden interference

I listen to my iPod in the car through a very 1980s cassette adapter. It's quite microphonic; when I pass radio broadcast towers the wire on the adapter picks up a serious hum.

However, I had a new type of interference today: I was driving home and was passed by a government car that had a Secret Service escort (that is, a blacked-out Cadillac being followed at close quarters by a Chevy Suburban), and as they passed me there was some weird interference noise and a loud pop through the speakers... as we went back and forth in traffic I kept waiting to see if it would happen again, but no luck... I wonder what on earth they were using in those cars?
