Pause for thought

I was having a look today at the brochures etc. for the 2006 health insurance plans offered by the megacorp I work for.

We're on the most expensive plan going (as a result of a series of administrative debacles not of my making and that are far too boring to relay here), which costs a little over $300 a month. The least expensive alternative (other than flexible spending accounts, which seem a bit of a gamble with a 3 year old and a 10 month old) is roughly $180 a month.

The most sobering part was the claim (probably true) that the company is meeting 75% of the costs per employee per month. That means that the true annual cost of the current plan would be $14,400 a year! Sobering stuff when you don't have a 16,000 employee company backing you up...

It's no wonder that so many people end up with no health insurance. And something like 60% of the costs for healthcare in this country are for administrative activities; surely there must be a better alternative out there.
