more days like this, sort of
We had a bit of a cold snap at the end of the working week and into Saturday. Today was great, though, it was around freezing in the morning but sunny, and got to about 55F / 13C.
R finally worked out today that her habit of the last couple of months on Sundays -- pancakes made from scratch for breakfast -- may be the reason that we don't get out of the house very early, so those days may be numbered. We got the kids to the zoo for a bit of fresh air, and then spent 30 minutes in the small mammal house so we could admire rock cavys, shouting lemurs, and the ever popular naked mole rats. (Seriously. We can't go to the zoo without seeing them.) It was also necessary to see the hippo, who is about to shipped off elsewhere so that they can provide the elephants with more space -- a fate that already befell the giraffe.
After poisoning the children with fast food for lunch, L and I set off to trade in coins for paper money, and to hit a toy store -- L wanted to get something for Rr's birthday next week. The coin trade-in was a near-bust; it took three tries to find a supermarket with a functioning machine, but L was able to find a little toy for her sister. I had it wrapped at the store to forestall temptation -- L was fascinated by the guy behind the counter with a foot high mohawk, so she barely noticed that anything was being wrapped.
Incidentally, that's not the only local independent toy shop that has some "alternative" staff, plainly it's a job in an environment that's appealing to people who don't want anything too corporate... and it gives the short customers a chance to point and announce with great clarity: Daddy, look at that man's funny hair!
