strange car theft
This is a little out of date, but worth mentioning anyway.
Our elderly neighbours across the street have a farm in Maryland - it's a combination of a weekend place for them, and they also have a caretaker who looks after a small herd of beef cattle (as opposed to milk cattle, that is, rather than say tofu cattle). Anyway, they have a large-ish pickup truck with the name of the farm on the side that Mr Neighbour likes to take for a drive every morning...
On Saturday last, we came out of the house to find that the truck had been stolen. Given the usual success of the DC police in finding stolen items and otherwise being helpful*, we figured that was the last he'd ever see of it. But who would steal a truck with the name of the owner's farm on the side? So Mr. Neighbour bought himself a new pickup on Wednesday, and lo and behold on Thursday morning the DC police called to say that they had found the truck -- out of gasoline but otherwise unmolested -- a couple of miles away. Evidently a kinder, gentler joy-rider had been at work... which is just odd. That suggests to me that it was a local teenager, so probably nothing will ever happen.
* The neighbours caucused over our favorite DC police moments. I think the best of all -- better than when a crackhead stole my bike and sold it, and the police told me to go to the distinctly rough area where he sold said bike so as to see if I could spot it, so they could retrieve it, for instance -- was a neighbour who had called the police when someone selling magazines door-to-door was being very threatening and hostile. The police showed up, told her not be such a hysteric, and then ticketed her for having an expired registration on her car...
